ETV Fault – Electronic Throttling Valve Circuit (Code 89)

Thermo King alarm code 89 indicates a failure in the Electronic Throttling Valve (ETV) control circuit. The ETV is a stepper-motor modulating valve in the suction line that regulates suction pressure and compressor loading on Thermo King SB-, SLXi, SLXe, SLX, SLX Whisper, T-Series, Precedent and TriPac reefer units. When the microprocessor cannot drive or read the ETV stepper coils correctly, it logs Code 89 and forces the unit into a protective mode — often unable to hold setpoint or pull down.

Possible causes

  • Failed ETV stepper motor coils (open or shorted winding)
  • Damaged ETV wiring harness — chafed, pinched, or corroded pins at the ETV connector
  • Water intrusion or corrosion in the ETV connector
  • Burned-out ETV driver on the HMI / microprocessor board
  • Loose or unseated connector at the ETV or at the controller
  • Low battery voltage during ETV drive test (below 11.5 VDC)
  • Blown ETV fuse (F10 or equivalent, depending on platform)
  • Mechanically seized ETV (valve stuck from debris or slugging)

Recommended actions

  • Run the ETV component test from the Service Menu (Guarded Access → Component Test → ETV) and watch for the valve to cycle 0→100%.
  • Check battery voltage — must be above 12.4 VDC before testing; a weak battery will false-trigger Code 89.
  • Disconnect the ETV connector and measure coil resistance: A-C and B-D should read ~50 Ω (SLXi/SLXe/Precedent). Open or shorted = replace ETV.
  • Inspect the ETV harness end-to-end for chafing against the frame, pinch points near the compressor, and green corrosion inside the connector pins.
  • Verify the ETV fuse (typically F10) — replace and re-test if blown.
  • If coils and harness test good, swap in a known-good HMI/controller to isolate a burnt ETV driver.
  • After replacing the ETV, always clear codes and run a Pretrip (PTI) to confirm the alarm does not return.
  • If Code 89 returns after ETV replacement, check for slugging liquid refrigerant returning to the compressor — that can mechanically damage the new valve.
